While the North tried to stop the South from withdrawing their spot in the Union, the North also denied the Southern states rights. The process of black slavery taking route in colonial Virginia was slow. Black slavery mostly became dominant in the 1680s. Slaves became the main labor system on plantations. The amount of white indentured servants declined so the demand for black slaves became necessary in the mid-1660s. The number of white indentured servants that Virginia had up until the mid 1660s, was enough to meet white peoples labor needs.

Many people went through Michigan to get to Canada quickly, there were many depots, and Michigan was a free state. Since Michigan was a free state, slaves could stay in Michigan and be free instead of going all the way to Canada. The Slaves wanted to escape through Michigan because it was easy to get to Canada from Michigan. This made it easy for slaves to escape with ease even though it was not going to be easy as it was. The Reconstruction is the first thing I would talk about. I believe many people still have the impression that once slaves were freed in the South, that was it—all of a sudden everything was great for them, when in reality, they were essentially still slaves. I never knew about the black codes, vagrant laws, and sharecropping that took place in the South until this class. Slavery is covered as early as 7th grade, and I believe that the Reconstruction period following it is a significant enough event that it should be addressed sooner, perhaps in high school, so even those who choose to not attend college have the chance to hear about it.

The slave colony I’ve chosen to focus on was in the state of Georgia in the United States. The European power that controlled it was the British. However, the freedom is limited to white males who own property. When colonists started to immigrate to America, they wanted to escape from under the rule of Britain.
Slavery was in opposition throughout the northern states, almost everyone opposed the concept of slavery. William Henry Seward, William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and Henry David Thoreau were a few of the thousands of people that opposed the concept of one not getting paid for work and having the same rights as objects. These people had two options to show what they believed in, break the law and oppose the government completely, or give their opposition due process to go through the government and see if what they believe in is just and constitutional. Yesterday, as I was searching for some information regarding slavery in first colonies, I came across an interesting historical document, titled “Resolutions of Germantown, Pennsylvania Mennonites, February 18, 1688”. It was the earliest known official protest against slavery. I also found two articles “The Bible, slavery and Founding Fathers” and “ The Founding Fathers and slavery” that try to describe how a slavery was perceived in that era and what founding fathers thought about it. I liked those articles because they include citations from original documents and therefore seem to be credible. They may also answer at least a tiny piece of your last question.
