The Crucible by Arthur Miller explains what the Salem Witch Trials are. In this book, Hale says that he thinks the devil will be heading to Parris’s house. Betty, Parris’s daughter, has already been taken by the devil. Wanting the best soul, the devil is going to try and get Reverend Parris. Satan feels as though he can get through to even better than just the normal people; the devil thinks he can get the Reverend. I mean it has already gotten to Betty. Why not try for one more step up? Hal thinks that the reasoning for the devil striking the Reverend’s house is because he wants the best soul possible.
