Reverend Parris is supposed to be a great Pastor in the little town of Salem; however he continues to be fixated on the belief of witches. The author, Arthur Miller was born in Manhattan in 1915 that has written several popular plays, but focuses on the Witch trails in his play, “The Crucible”. The Crucible focuses many of the witch trails that take place in Salem. The Minister of Salem’s church, Reverend Parris believes in witches after finding his daughter and other girls dancing in the woods. Reverend Parris is extremely paranoid and worries about becoming better known within the community.
Salem Witch Trials, in the spring of 1692, was a time of chaos and turmoil in Salem, Massachusetts. The novel, The Crucible by Arthur Miller illustrates a series of accusations of witchcraft against many citizens of Salem. The Salem Witch Trials consisted of accusations, court hearings, prosecutions, and executions of people who were believed to have been possessed by the devil and therefore committed witchcraft. It was a time were citizens of Salem “accordingly looked on neighbors with some suspicion” and Salem was “a community riven with schisms” (Miller xiii). The Crucible’s tragic hero, John Proctor, a farmer in his mid-thirties who “was the kind of man – powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led – who cannot refuse support to partisans without drawing their deepest resentment” (Miller 19) is a man who experiences the trials first hand through his affair with Abigail Williams and through his marriage to Elizabeth.
I am exploring the question of are we are motivated by fear, human nature, and just how far we will go for our reputations. All three of theses are major themes in the Cucubile by Arthur Miller. And each theme plays a major part in how the Crucible was rounded while also showing a very strong perspective on how the author wanted the reader to perceive the crucible. The reason I think that we continue to read, study, and perform the Crucible to this day is because it was a major part in history where many innocent people were killed due to fear and false accusations. The Crucible was written about a time period that Arthur Miller acknowledges as a time where fear and reputation totally took over.

As he finds them dancing around the fire and practicing what he thinks is witchcraft, because of his reputation of being the minister of the town, he hopes that no one will find out about what he has seen and potentially ruin his reputation. Throughout The Crucible by Arthur Miller Parris goes through ups and downs with the town and the townspeople. “Abigail, I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me, and now, just now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character” (Miller 1263).

Upon arrival he faces many difficult scenarios for even an expert like himself. Reverend Hale’s feelings are tried throughout the entirety of his visit in Salem; his opinions change with every new stone overturned. When Hale is initially interviewing Betty Parris and Abigail he uncovers a certain turn of events to persuade him to believe witches are loose in Salem.
