The Role Of The Titans In Greek Mythology

The Titans were extremely powerful beings in Greek mythology. They were famous because they led to the birth of the Gods we know such as Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, etc. The Titans ruled over the universe before the gods, but it was primarily Cronus who was in charge. They were worshiped because of their role in Greek mythology, being creators of the gods, more specifically Cronus. It’s important to know who they were and what they did because it helps to better understand how the Greek gods came to be. The Titans were the children of Gaea, who represented Earth, and Uranus, who the sky. From what I’m able to tell not much is known about their early lives, other than Cronus over threw his father Uranus and became ruler of the universe. The Titans were siblings, there were 12 Titans in total, 6 male and 6 female. The Titans names were Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Lapetus, Cronus, Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, Cronus being the youngest and most important. Atlas, Leto,Perses, and Asterie were mentioned as Titans as well in some Greek myths. One myth the Titans were involved in was the story of how the Gods were born. Cronus and his sister Rhea married and had many children, those children would grow up to become the Gods. Fearing that he would be over thrown Cronus decided to eat his children as they were born. Rhea tricked Cronus into eating a stone and hid her son Zeus from him on the island Crete. Once Zeus had grown up, he tricked his father Cronus into vomiting up his brothers and sisters. Another story would be the war between the Titans and Gods. After freeing his brothers and sisters, Zeus waged war with the Titans, though, some of the Titans sided with Zeus.
