Holli Nuss Martins English 9 14, May, 2024 Gypsy Genocide Genocides have transpired throughout human history for hundreds of years but one of the most devastating was the Roma Genocide. Genocide is crucial to discuss in order to educate people and help prevent future genocides. The Roma Genocide occurred between the Nazis and the Roma people. Many Roma people were murdered in this genocide and had to fight every day to survive. The Roma Genocide, also known as the Gypsy Genocide, occurred during World War II when Hitler and the Nazis made an extreme effort to exterminate all Gypsies by murdering hundreds of thousands of Romani men, women, and children. When the Nazis first started persecuting the Gypsies, they had initially set up camps that would be used for labor, specifically for the Roma people, but were planned to be used during the upcoming genocide (Persecution of Prewar). While the Gypsies started getting persecuted when Hitler came to power, World War II set the genocide of the Roma into action (What Groups of). Nazi ideology states that “... certain groups of people—such as Jews and Roma—were racial threats that undermined the racial purity of the German people" (What Groups of). Because of how the Germans viewed the Roma, they passed laws like the "Law for the Prevention of Offspring with Hereditary Defects", "Law against Dangerous Habitual Criminals", and "Law for the Protection of German Blood and Honor" to justify their actions and eventually place the Roma in concentration camps (Documentation of the Persecution).
