The Roman Republic and Roman Empire eras’ transition consisted of several changes. Ambitions and gaining supreme power led to the Roman Republic to turn into an Empire. The Roman Republic was a foundation set up by the people of Rome which was later adjusted after the rise of the Roman Empire. The ruling emperors began rule Rome in a different way in order to conquer and strengthen Rome vastly throughout the area. Major differences are evident between the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. The Roman Republic’s system was based on the rule of law. Rome consisted of four divisions and social rankings. (Lewis. 2012.) The lowest rank was the slaves, attaining no rights at all. The empire was not commonly known as a dictatorship among the Roman people due to their intense dislike towards dictatorship; though the system did resemble a dictatorship. The end of the Republic drifted towards one-man rule which led to Rome being dominated by emperors. (Lewis. 2012) The first emperor, Augustus decreased the size of the senate. (Chew. 2014)The emperor sat with two consuls during the senate meetings. (Chew. 2014.) Higher categorized senators had the power speak before the lower classified senators but the emperor had the right to speak at any period. (Chew.2014.) This method presented a false democracy for the Roman people; the final approval was mandated from the emperor. Without the approval the senate’s decision was voided. (Chew. 2014) The senate lost most of the influence compared senate during the Roman Republic. Augustus states, “When the dictatorship was offered to me, both in my presence and my absence, by the people and senate, when Marcus Marcellus and Lucius Arruntius were consuls (22 B.C.E.), I did not accept it…” (Web. Augustus.1998.) Augustus intelligently attained most of the power while pleasing the Romans which assisted him to rule for a long period of time without getting assassinated. (Lewis. 2012.) To join the force, a citizen would attend an interview with a letter of introduction written by another person such as a local officer. (“Becoming a Soldier” 2014) After being accepted, soldiers were given an advance pay and placed into a small unit led by an officer. At first, all Roman citizens were able to take part in the military after a medical examination and preferred height.
