Happiness can be defined as an expression of how oneself may feel on the inside. Happiness is showing and enjoying the satisfaction of joy. There are many types of happiness, which can be expressed in many ways. In the folktales we have read this semester, three major characteristic of happiness are: when a character achieves his or her goal; when the story ends in a successful or satisfactory manner; and when the character is lucky. First, happiness is portrayed when a character achieves his or her goal. In other words, happiness is portrayed when a character gets what he or she has been working for. Take for example, “ The Ruined Man Who Became Rich Again Through a Dream.” Having a dream to go to Cairo from his god, the man was beaten from robbers and sent to the police. After speaking to the Wali and compared both dreams, the man went back to Baghdad and found his fortune under his fountain. Another example is, “The Tinker and the Ghost.” After hearing a castle is haunted, Esteban attempts to exorcise the ghost. Later that evening after hearing the ghost’s problem, Esteban helps the ghost and distributes the money. In both folktales, each character achieves his or her goal …show more content…

In other words, the story ends in a positive way. Take for example, “ The Black Cloth.” In this folktale Aiwa’s stepmother ordered Aiwa to turn a black cloth in white. After traveling Aiwa’s mother gives her the white cloth, which she was buried in giving it, back to the stepmother accomplishing her task. Another example is, “ The Warrior Maiden.” Hiding from Mingoes, a young girl told the people of Oneida that she has a plan to sacrifice herself for the people of Oneida by going to the Mingoes. After walking back to the hideout the Mingoes were killed by large rocks, and the young girl saved the people of Oneida. In both folktales, each of them ends the story in a successful or satisfactory
