What controls more of your life, fear or courage? Throughout the vicissitudes of life, there are many opportunities that we pass up that could change our own, or someone else’s lifestyle. In the novel The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan, is about a young boy by the name of Will enters manhood in the Kingdom Araluen. He is an orphan who tries to make new friends as he learns more about his past. Will has to decide if he trusts his personal judgment, or to flee the situation. He and other characters in the book need to gain the courage and demonstrate authority over their behavior. In the book and everyday life, don’t let fear control you. Throughout the book, Will only shows courage in certain parts of his life. Usually, he gets scared at the very sight of something, like frightening creatures, however, Will overcomes his fears. In the very beginning, he has a lot of anxiety within himself. On page 137, Will exclaimed, “He thought that he’d like it very well if it went the other way(the boar).” Moreover, Will knows there was not a second to go to waste as he put his feet in the stirrups, and distracts the angry boar from Horace, during the boar …show more content…

He knows that at times he couldn’t get out of a situation, so he needs to display bravery and has to find valor within himself. Horace who is a first-year Battleschool cadet, tries to fit in with the rookies. However, three second-year cadet bullies keep tormenting him for being different. The bullying included, “came from Alda, who whipped a heavy hessian sack over his head, pulling a drawcord tight so that he was contained from the waist up, blinded and helpless” (page 151). Horace has to face his fears and stand up for himself. He confronts the bullies and beats them up with help of friends, Halt and Will. In the end, he realizes that from time to time, the only way of getting out of a difficult circumstances is to stand up for
