“We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” Arthur Miller wrote this quote from his book The Crucible, which gives an insight on how the trials and how easy and fast the town changed. In Salem Massachusetts in 1692 the Salem Witch Trials took place. Citizens began to believe that people were practicing witchcraft in their town. Many citizens believed that they way witches will get you is by baking a cake. They thought that when witches baked cakes, that they were casting a spell in it. Tensions were high between the two places. Citizens in the village were poor and had no money. Most of them had the occupation of a farmer and would grow crops for Salem. In the town, people were wealthier than the farmers in the village and owned a lot of land. Since the diversity was very strong between them, the village people wanted independence from the town. The town hated the idea of them separating because the town depended on the village people for food. Without the village, the town would have no idea how to get food to feed the families living there. The wealthy people in the town chose the price and the tax for the food that they were buying from the village. Therefore, the village would not be getting a lot of money for their crops. In Salem, the village was very religious. The only church there was in the Town and the villagers wanted one in the village. The town and the village were very different back then and would always disagree about what was best. When the rumor of witchcraft came from the girls, it started out in the village then spread out to the town. Most of the accusers were in the village and they were pointing figures at the town’s people, saying they were practicing witchcraft. There are many reasons on why this would happen to this small town. This topic is important information and insight on what really caused the Salem Witch Trials. This event shows how fast a small town or village can change with an illness, feud, and boredness. For example, Martha Corey was one of the many victims in the trials. She explains that she is not a witch but the jury does not care and sentences her to death. This shows that everyone thought it was easier for the town if they just blamed it on someone and would take the easy way out. These issues are still happening in the world today. Places like Syria and Afghanistan are having battles because they can’t get over a feud and they are a struggling country so they think that the best thing is to go to war. In Salem they thought the best thing to do was to start taking the lives of innocent people for what they believed to be witchcraft because they were stressed out from their feud with the town in
