Throughout the course of the Salem Witch Trials more than two hundred men and women were accused, nineteen were hung, and one was tortured to death. The people in Salem were very superstitious about their religion and the devil. All of the accusations and killings were based on dreams and visions, that anyone could have. The Salem Witch Trials started in February of 1692, in colonial Massachusetts (Brooks; Blumberg). Two girls, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, were the first to be “bewitched” (how; were). The girls started a societal conflict because they wanted attention from parents and friends because they felt like they weren’t getting enough.
