Samaritans: The Misfortunate of the Bible

Who were the Samaritans? The Samaritans were people who live in Samaria. The Jewish people and the Samaritans did not get along. ”The Jews at the time of Christ viewed the Samaritans as idol worshipping apostates to be shunned who had intermarried with the Gentiles”(Rudd). The Jews thought of the Samaritans as dirty people because they were “mix-breeds”. ”The Jews made false accusations to Jesus for being a Samaritan….because he was from Nazareth, a city north of Mt. Gerizim”(Rudd). As one can see, the Samaritans had a difficult life because of the Jews.
How did Jesus feel about the Samaritans? Jesus believed the Samaritans were great, but He did not shun them like the Jews (Rudd). In fact it was the Samaritans who rejected Jesus.
As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, ‘Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?’ But Jesus turned and rebuked them.
