Generally, at a certain point, everyone losses their loss of innocence to fully experience the reality of life. The carpet and the books are used by both authors to illustrate transformations in characters. The narrator of The Persian Carpet by Hanan Shaykh realizes the selfishness of her mother, when she chooses to lie and betray her daughter, causing her to experience a loss of innocence filled with anger and sadness. The narrator of The Boat by Alistair Macleod realizes the cruel truth of his father’s personal sacrifices when he feels obligated to stay and help his family on the boat, rather than pursuing an education, which was his father’s only desire, causing him a loss of innocence filled with sadness and anger when he could not practice that. “Greasy Lake” by T.C. Boyle follows a group of well read college students desperate to portray themselves as hardened badasses by drinking cheap alcohol and cruising around town till the break of dawn. On the third night of summer vacation, the boys fid themselves at Greasy Lake going toe to toe with a shady character they mistakenly identified as a friend. The ever-worsening situation results in the shady individual collapsing from a tire iron to the head, sending the group of boys into a destructive fervor. A foil is a character in a book who erodes the identity of another character. One example of a foil is Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer is Huckleberry Finn’s foil throughout Mark Twain’s book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck and Tom each have their own individual character, but when Huck is around Tom’s character his character falters. Others however believe that neither Tom nor Huck have good character.
What started as a thrilling new adventure for American trapper and hunter Sanger Rainsford quickly became a nightmare. First, foreshadowing ensures that the book is full of excitement.
In the opening pages, Connell uses sensory language so readers can experience the story more than visually. Connell says, “The cry pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea dosed over his head. ”(Connell 2). This literary element is sensory language. The reference of “blood-warm waters” is used to attract the reader's sense of touch.

Although, on January 13th, every soul in the united states had their eyes glued on the news channels, following the crash. There are two different warrens, a group of rabbits, that represent totalitarian and democratic government. Hazel rules over the democratic warren Watership Down while General Woundwort rules over the totalitarian warren Efrafa. Their pasts influence the structure of their societies.
