Character Analysis For “The Save”
Michel Jordan once said “Never say never because limits like fears, are often just illusions.” I read the short story called “The Save” by Joseph Bruchnac. The main character in this story is Oren. He wants to become a better player to the sport his culture created. Oren believes he isn’t good enough and often doubts himself. Oren is a complex character because he is under pressure, doubtful, and he is determined.
To begin with Oren is a complex character because he is under pressure. In the story Oren wants to be good because the Iroquois created lacrosse. "While we invented the game. We are the Iroquois." This is significant because he is under pressure because he wants to show everyone that his culture is the best at the game since they made it. Oren wants to live up to his grandfather because he was an All-American. He feels pressured and feels that he isn’t good enough unless he becomes a great player too. When Oren saved the goal in the middle of flipping he doubted himself. He thought his save was luck and it was not good. "It was just dumb luck." This means Oren is doubtful because he thinks his save was just luck. Oren was thinking that he couldn’t ever save a shot like that again. Oren needs to be more confident and trust himself instead of doubting everything. Oren thought everyone was cheering for the goal but what he didn’t know was that everyone was cheering for his save. "I really am a bum." "They're praising that goal scored while I was belly flopping," Oren thought. This is important to notice because he is saying that he is a bum and that everyone was praising the goal. He shouldn’t think that way and instead he should be positive and learn from mistakes if he didn’t save
