“The Scarlet Ibis,” written by James Hurst, is a bittersweet story. A weak autistic child is born into a family of cotton farmers. They name the child Doodle, which was given by his older brother. His brother was often cruel, but he pushed Doodle to work to fit in. They fail in their efforts at the end of summer.
The story of Yankee Doodle is a well known story and has a catchy song to it too. You probably remember it as a kid but in the story “The Scarlet Ibis” one of the characters is named Doodle but the story isn't what you think it is. Doodle had a brother that wanted to teach him how to do thing to become more like a normal person because Doodle had this illness from birth. Brother was a good brother to Doodle for trying to help him become a normal person. Brother spent countless hours to try to help Doodle walk and become a normal person.
In The Scarlet Ibis written by James Hurst has a major conflict where Doodle’s brother being too ashamed of his own little brother’s frail condition and trying to change him because of it. This conflict in particular was man versus man. This story starts off with Doodle being born and everyone around him thought that he was going to die. In that moment of time they had a casket built for Doodle. The brother, being so disappointed in him tried killing Doodle in his sleep, only to see him smiling which changed his mind.
In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst we learn that a person should enjoy everything they have while they have it because it will not always be there. Early in the story this is showed when Hurst writes "It was the clove of the seasons and summer was dead, but autumn had not yet been born. " This resembles everything that has any form of life and some other things will always eventually die. This story is about a boy and his younger brother “Doodle.” Doodle is very far behind all the other kids his age and his brother is determined to catch him up. After teaching him one thing his pride gets the better of him and one day he pushes too hard and the worst happens.
In the story “Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator is flawed in his inability to let go of his desire to have a normal brother.
