In the The Scorch Trials by James Dashner I have been noticing an interesting author's craft. I have noticed that Dashner has included challenges the kids must overcome in the form of grievers in the first book and cranks in the second book. They are very similar and I think they were put in both of the story’s to stop Thomas and the gladers from getting out of the maze and stop them from getting the cure for the flare.

In the Maze runner They also have differences a griever is a creature that lives in the maze that comes out after it gets dark. There purpose is to kill the gladers. In the first story Thomas learned what a griever was in the first book when one of the other gladers was found with a griever bite and almost attacked
