In the book called “The Secret Life of Bees” written by Sue Monk Kidd. Lily Owens was a fourteen-year-old little girl who realized that everything in her life has changed. In the novel, Lily lived with her father T-Ray and Rosaleen, the maid. Her father was a very cruel man and would either ignore or punish her. One night he got upset at her and made her sit on uncooked grits for hours; which felt like pieces of glass on her knees. Whenever she was allowed to get up from such tortious pain; her knees were swollen and cut up from the grits. On her birthday, she asked her father to buy her a charm bracelet and he wouldn’t do it. After trying to pack, Deborah (Lily’s mother) went to the closet to get a gun. T-Ray knocked it out of Deborah’s hands and it slid over to Lily. Lily then grabbed the gun and fired it. She ended up killing her mother that night, on an accident. That memory has taunted her since then. Her father always told Lily that her mother didn’t love her. But Lily still longed to find information about her mother. Deborah left a picture from her passed and Lily thought if I am going to find answers about my mother; I need to go to this place. Throughout Lily’s life, she had encountered a lot of harsh punishments, feeling unloved and not appreciated. Finally, after years of torment and pain, she finally found a lady named August who knew Lily’s mother very well. August actually helped Deborah many different times in life. Lily even opened up her eyes to things that she wouldn’t of before. She realized that people of different race are equal to the whites, even though her whole life she was taught different. She finally found out what her mother was like and the fact that her mother wanted the best for Lily. That her father had lied to her all those years about her mother not loving her. At the end of the novel, T-Ray went looking for Lily and found out where she had been. When her father arrived she didn’t want to leave August and her new family. Lily finally confronted her family about him resenting her all these years over the death of her mother and his wife. He finally admitted that he would never forgive her actions. She finally realized how horrible of a monster her father really was and that she was better than that. She left her father left that day with a forgiveness from her but she didn’t get the same in
