Throughout Lily’s life, she had encountered a lot of harsh punishments, feeling unloved and not appreciated. Finally, after years of torment and pain, she finally found a lady named August who knew Lily’s mother very well. August actually helped Deborah many different times in life. Lily even opened up her eyes to things that she wouldn’t of before. She realized that people of different race are equal to the whites, even though her whole life she was taught different. She finally found out what her mother was like and the fact that her mother wanted the best for Lily. That her father had lied to her all those years about her mother not loving her. At the end of the novel, T-Ray went looking for Lily and found out where she had been. When her father arrived she didn’t want to leave August and her new family. Lily finally confronted her family about him resenting her all these years over the death of her mother and his wife. He finally admitted that he would never forgive her actions. She finally realized how horrible of a monster her father really was and that she was better than that. She left her father left that day with a forgiveness from her but she didn’t get the same in
