A dynamic character is defined as a literary persona who undergoes an important inner change; a change in personality or attitude. Odysseus, main character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, is no exception. Despite facing the hardships of war and the challenges of the journey home, Odysseus keeps his tactical outlook. However, he does not remain the powerful and confident man that left Ithaka.
The Unstoppable Odysseus Odysseus and his men had came upon an island where they stayed and feasted on wine and wild goats for three days. After the third day Odysseus and his men stormed the main island where the Cyclopes lived. The Cyclopes did not live by rules or had any sense of hospitality; they aren 't god fearing men. Cyclopes lived off the land, farming and they had their herd of sheep that they took extremely well care of. They were huge, bigger than any men they were creatures to big to be any man.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
Odysseus’ Weaknesses In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer reveals that Odysseus’ encounter with the Cyclops magnifies his curiosity and hubris, allowing him to defeat the Cyclops despite his weaknesses. Odysseus shows he is a weak leader when he displays signs of curiosity because he wants to see the Cyclops that dwells in his cavern. After climbing to the cavern of the Cyclops, Odysseus alongside his men enter the home of the Cyclops and examine the belongings inside: “My men came pressing round me, pleading: ‘Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it? We’ll drive the kids and lambs aboard. We say put out again on good salt
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus men did deserve their punishment for eating Helios’s cattle because, well first of all do not eat first, you are supposed to ask first, if they say yes then eat, but if they say no, do not eat. All the trouble that the men got odyssey into, I really do think that they did deserve their punishment for all the things that they have done to get odyssey in trouble with all the gods. Well there's another thing Eurylochus convinces the men to eat the cattle of the sun. Then odysseus wakes up to find that the men has broken the oaths and killed some cattle, so it was the men falt. Even though they were starved, there is no reason to steal and kill a god's cattle.
Ruby Mendoza 11-14-16 So far in the Odyssey Odysseus seems to be the most dangerous character for a couple of reasons. In book nine of the Odyssey Odysseus refuses to leave the Cyclopes Island out of curiosity. He said and I quote “ I wished to see the caveman, what he has to offer “. Staying on the island proves to be a mistake for many of his men were eaten by the cyclop. Odysseus sacrificed many of his men just to see this “ caveman”.
In The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer, Odysseus, a hero from Ithaca, is trapped on his way home from Athens and Troy. His son, Telemachus, goes on a journey looking for his lost father. Both son and father want to reclaim their house from the suitors who wish to marry Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. Genghis Khan, Choi Yuna, my brother, An Thai, and Odysseus have traits like strength, thoughtfulness, and attractiveness. People need heroes with these traits because they need role models and someone to guide them through life.
In the Odyssey, the most important trait that is exhibited by Odysseus is intelligence. When Odysseus was curious to see what the Cyclops were like, he took his crew to the Cyclops’ home. They ended up in the cave of Polyphemus, which is Poseidon’s one-eyed monster son. Odysseus and his men had to find a way out before he ate them all. “If I killed him we perished there as well, for we could never move his ponderous doorway slab aside.”
In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many threats that could jeopardize his chance of coming back to Ithaca as the king. Odysseus faces the threats of losing his supporters on Ithaca, Losing his spot as king, and faces the threat of temptation. First, Odysseus faces the threat of losing the people that support him on Ithaca. He faces this threat because he has been gone for so long that hope in his return has been lost. Since he has been gone for so long, Ithaca has gone without a leader and has become a dirty and bad place.
Both Odysseus and I have both shown level headedness. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is trapped in a cave with the gigantic man eating cyclops. The cyclops left them trapped in the cave for a day while he tended to his sheep giving him time to think. Odysseus finally comes up with an ingenious plan to put the cyclops into a deep sleep, but it would require him to stay level headed in one of the most dangerous things he ever had to do. Odysseus went up to the cyclops and offered him some extremely potent wine to put him into an very deep slumber so they could stab him in the eye.
The main character Odysseus in the Odyssey written by Homer is generally thought to be a great hero; however, he shows more traits of a quite flawed character on closer inspection. Around the beginning of Odysseus’ journey home after the war, Odysseus decides to take a detour to the home of a cyclops deciding to not listen to his men’s suggestions to leave while they still could; consequently, it does not end well: “Ah, how sound that was, Yet I refused. I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer no pretty sight it turned out, for my friend” (9.130-132). This thought by Odysseus shows that he realized his decision to go to the mysterious island wasn’t the most rational one and that his men’s pleas to leave were the better option, but he decides to be stubborn and place his curiosity before his men’s safety resulting in a non-heroic
Odysseus has many trials throughout his adventure. The Homeric usual hero is what he is set up as but unlike most of them he redefines himself. Homer’s creation of Odysseus as a dynamic character through the stories within stories and conflict explores the importance of the evolution of characters despite his apparent hero status within Greek culture Odysseus displays a strong hubris in the first parts of the Odyssey which would fit his reputation as the famous war hero he is. This turns to become a burden on him, he is determined and cares for his men yet his selfish and arrogant behavior cost him those men.
While curiosity is projected to be a beneficial way of learning, it can also lead to dangerous situations. The protagonist, Odysseus, experiences the negative effects of curiosity in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, as he embarks on a life changing journey. In the story, Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, is returning from the Trojan War, and instead of going straight to his home, his curiosity takes him on a variety of detours, risking not only his life, but the lives of his crew. When Odysseus finally returns home, his curiosity disappears, and he becomes very focused and determined to remove suitors that have overrun his kingdom. Throughout the epic, Odysseus behaves curiously and wanders with no clear goal of returning home, but later, when he is faced with the task of removing the suitors from his palace, he becomes driven to achieve his goal in order to restore control over his kingdom and be reunited with his wife, Penelope.
In the story The Odyssey by Homer the book has three important threats that come up while Odysseus is on his journey. The three most important threats are when he gets “stuck” on a terrible island, how he’s going to figure out if his family is still loyal to him back at home, and lastly all the guys he kills on his land so that he doesn’t get killed. The first threat he has to overachieve is the island. Odysseus gets trapped on an island with a beautiful woman and beautiful landscape. The woman doesn’t want him to go back to his wife so she persuades him to stay.
Before every student enters high school they are told “you won't make it out with your same friend group” and every student replies “yes we will, we’re different”. The challenge I have faced is just that, losing the friends I thought would be there forever. In The Odyssey similar events take place for Odysseus multiple times, though some could say that Odysseus does not lose his men until they are killed by Zeus. The challenge I faced is similar to Odysseus’ because he and I lose friends to inappropriate behavior and tough decisions.
