He, although the punk in-group was against conformity, conformed to the punk standards of unloving sex and natural equality between the sexes. The in-group of punk conformed to its own standards but refused to conform to most of society’s standards. Graffin also explains that punk comes in many different subcultures as he says: “A sixteen year old girl from an affluent religious family who shows up to church with her green Mohawk and FUCK JESUS shirt is punk. But so is a forty-two-year-old biology professor who claims that Charles Darwin’s ideas were wrong.”(20).
Although the movie is centered around Auggie, a little boy with a facial deformity, it gives the perspectives of his sister and few others. The purpose of giving multiple perspectives was probably to show that each side has different interpretations and repercussions that come from a common event. I thought it was easy to relate to at least one aspect of each of the characters and their perspectives. In the case of Liv, she claimed that everything evolved around Auggie, and in all honesty it did. She often came second which made it hard for her to open up about the hurt she felt when her best friend traded her for cooler friends.
Inspired by social icons in the news, most American followed suit in the crazy hair trends, soon making them the norm. Following the trend of consumerism, dressing for success also became big as citizens tried to mimic the wealth and beauty they had come to know in icons of the time. Genres of dressing also arose in the contrasting styles of “Preppy” and “Street Style”. The first favoring the typical white-suburban look, many wore pastel polos, sweaters, Keds shoes, and jean or khaki pants. Street style, however; followed the rise of Hip Hop and Pop, taking inspiration more from music stars in the form of sequin dresses, colorful athleisure pieces, wild prints, and outrageous colors.

Punks style of music is considered uneducated, raw, and rough because of the vessel in which it is administered. Kids with giant, dyed mohawks, leather jackets with studs, and screaming into a microphone was not the typical way to get your message out to the masses. However, their message of tolerance, police brutality, and corporate scams have all hit the headlines over the last decade which brings into question, is punk music uneducated, or was it considered uneducated because of the way the bands portrayed themselves?

Punk "started out as a music-based subculture” (LeBlanc 33). The evolution of Rock music began in the 1950’s with Rock and Roll. Rock and Roll introduced people like Elvis Presley. After Rock and Roll, Folk Rock was introduced including Neil Young. Then there was Blue’s Rock, which included BB King.
Examples of this include bright spiked hair, bullet belts which were inspired by post-vietnam war, body modifications, piercings, tattoos, patched and torn clothes, studs, leather battle jackets, band patches, pins, badges, and vests (furlong). Moreover, punk fashion played a crucial role in expressing this idea of rejecting conformity. Punk fashion did not just break down societal norms but also included all people groups from all classes meaning that anyone from any background could enjoy and was encouraged to participate in punk fashion. Furthermore, the use of DIY meant that clothes were being reused and modified so people from all financial backgrounds were able to enjoy this subculture without fear of paying hefty amounts on clothes, it was so important to the culture that a subgenre of punk called crust punk was born and gained its name from the heavy punk music associated with it and the attire typically worn by a crust punk which consisted mainly on patched up pants which made it accessible for those punks from poorer backgrounds to feel included in punk fashion, some other crust punks would willingly become homeless to also be even less connected and cut off the limitations of the American system such as rent, taxes, being able to fend for oneself rather than relying on establishments that American punks distrusted (cooper). Additionally, punks were making the correct impact onto the conforming public as many found their style to be absurd.

Grunge is a sub-genre of alternative rock and started in the mid-1980 in American state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. By the early 1990s grunge spread to California and other parts of America building strong followings and signing major record deals. Grunge became most successful in the first half of the 1990s, due mainly to the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl jam’s Ten and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. The success of these bands boosted the popularity of alternative rock and made grunge the most popular form of hard rock music at the time. In the late 1990s most grunge bands disbanded or faded but their influence continues to effect modern day music.
En Masse, Rock and Roll has influenced various areas of the youth culture amid the 1960’s, dominating many areas of the world. The popularity and international outlook for rock music resulted in a compelling impact on society as Rock and Roll influenced everyday fashions, attitudes, and behaviors. Drawing on many different styles, this genre of music excited a worldwide generation of young listeners, while, at the same time, distressing musical, cultural, and social authorities. Presently, it is tough to fully understand the bitter criticism the new music generated in its entirety. Rock music gave shape to many different counter-cultural movements which engulfed the world.
The punk artwork was very influential to the cyberpunk era, through the art made at the time from music covers or poster designs. Jamie Reid being one of the key leaders in punk art. Working with the “Sex Pistols” from collaborations with Malcom McLaren after 1976, Jamie Reid made some of the most iconic poster designs of the 20th century. These were often very politically anti-establishment and specifically anti-monarchy infused. Many of his designs were black and white with very specific use of typography using mixtures and collages of fonts and sizes from different newspapers that have been merged together.
