In the fall of 1977, American rock fans began to hear about a movement in the UK called “punk”, spearheaded in large part by the Sex Pistols and The Clash rock bands. Between 1967 and 1975, most of the rock world was focused on psychedelia and main stream rock, punk was brewing underground. Punk rock is defined as fast loud rock music, messy guitar playing. Musicians like The Patti Smith Group and The Sex Pistols, were big punk rock groups. The Patti Smith group became the first band from the developing New York punk scene to sign a major label deal. New York was by no means the only city in the United States to maintain a growing punk music scene. Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston and many other towns saw a flourishing of this style.
