The story took place during the Great Depression. The sharecropper’s time had come to an abrupt end.
John asked if we could imagine how it would feel not to shower. To have dust that grew thick on the floor and chairs. Dust looking like spilled salt on blankets and hats. Could we imagine living through the dust bowl days? Could we imagine eating pork that we salted ourselves? Unable to keep dust off the lids of pork barrels or off our food, we ate the earth as well as its produce.
