I was going to choose this piece as well, I think the artist did an amazing job with it. I agree that this painting shows how difficult life can be and all you can do at times is turn to prayer. This work relates to the down fall of men and the tragedy of possible life defeat. Also, I agree with you statement on how the painting had balance and how everything around the man in the painting helps keep the focus on him.

Looking at Realist work I thought the painting The Shoemaker (1878) by Ferdinand Hodler, was a work that relates to The Voyage of life. The painter showed the world what is it looked like to be a shoemaker, he took a look at the inside of a shoemakers life. He used grayish yellow colors that gave off a sense of a dull life.
