Half way through the making of the movie American Sniper, Chris Kyle was killed by a veteran he was trying to help. Monday, February 9th, the jury was seated for the beginnings of the trial concerning the death of American Sniper Chris Kyle. 10 women and 10 men were not dismissed. This is 8 more jurors seated than a normal trial. Eddie Ray Routh has been charged with the capital offense of murder for killing Kyle and his friend 35-year old Chad Littlefield. Kyle and Littlefield were trying to help through the VA with Routh’s PTSD when he shot them at a Texas gun range in 2013, according to prosecutors. According to his mother, Jodi, he had been in and out Veterans Affairs for the last couple of years. Over two years he had made no progress so things started to spiral out of control. To some extent Kyle also showed signs pointing to PTSD. He had obviously been exposed to traumatic events with over 160 confirmed kills in his role as an Army marksman. For Kyle’s funeral thousands stood along the route that his convoy took to the funeral site. Many veterans could not help but attending the “Legend’s” funeral. Routh’s attorney planned to get off on an insanity plea. Based on the overwhelming evidence, it would be hard to make any case against his guilt, but using insanity charges the death penalty will be avoided, especially in Texas, a state with over 400 executions. Routh grew up only 20 miles east of Kyle’s hometown. Jodi Roth, Eddie Routh’s mother, was an aide at the school that Kyle’s children attended. She approached him one day and asked him to help her son, which sparked their first meeting. She mentioned that his PTSD was only getting worse.
