Chapter 8: The Sinister Edinburgh Vaults and Its Ghouls The Edinburgh vaults consist of an underground labyrinth of passages and chambers with a dark and notorious history. Even today, the violent past seems to still stick to the place in the form of spirits and activities that visitors often encounter. Tour guides have mentioned people getting scratched in the skin and their hair get pulled so violently that the scalps bleed! The old town surrounding the vaults is full of dark and narrow alleys that look gloomy and terrible. Wisps of fog float by during the winters. It covers less than a square mile yet houses more than 60,000 people in the 17th century. People lived in tiny rooms that they called homes. Life was brutal, nasty and often short, owing to diseases and murderers being rampant in those days. Edinburgh was the capital of witch hunts and probably the place where tortures and executions of women thought to be witches was at its very worst. As it has been observed, whenever there are new guides around, there is more activity in the vaults than usual. They hear strange things, get shoved roughly or see ghastly faces. Tourists and guides alike have reported about sudden temperature changes. Edinburgh Vaults is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the world. It consists of a series of nineteen chamber arches that was home to local taverns, cobblers and shops. It has its dark side – this same place is also the den of thieves, murderers and nasty characters who didn’t hesitate to rob or murder people for their own gains. The vaults were one of the most dangerous places in the city. Based on the reports from visitors on the strange and sometimes violent activity inside the Edinburgh vaults, it is very much possible that the restless spirits of the criminals still hang around
