The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt is set during the gold rush era. This novel is a tale of two brothers, Charlie and Eli, who work together as contract killers. Right from the beginning it is unmistaken that Eli does not share the same eagerness for killing as his brother Charlie. As the novel advances Eli’s sensitive side becomes more familiar. He starts to watch his weight, brush his teeth, and even starts to search for love. when Eli finally sees their target Hermit Kermit Warms progressive way to find gold, he completely leaves the path of murder. Eli sees Warms conception of the elegance of the human mind, and decides to put his murderous ways behind him once and for all. Through the acts of saving a horse, falling in love, and seeing Warms concept, Eli transforms from a heartless killer into a kind a gentle man who recognizes the brilliance in even the smallest of things.

However, being a gentlemen is not the first impression the reader first take of Eli sisters. Because Eli and Charlie are killers, it is almost impractical how a man who makes as living by heartlessly taking people's lives can be a gentle man. Deeper into the novel he shows his wish to leave his murderous ways when he searches for love and someone to settle with. Finally the experience Eli had with Warm made him realize that living the life of a murderer is pointless and there are better things he could be doing with his life.
