In “The Sniper” by Liam O’ Flaherty, The Republican Sniper is shown as curious, courageous, and aware. The Sniper is shown to be curious in the story when he goes and looks at the dead sniper’s body. “When the sniper reached the laneway on the street level, he felt a sudden curiosity as to identify of the enemy sniper whom he had killed” (Flaherty 439). This quote shows that The Republican Sniper is curious because during this part, he wants to identify who he had killed. During the story, The Republican Sniper is also courageous. He shows that he is courageous when this happens “Cautiously he raised himself and peered over the parapet” (Flaherty 437). The Republican Sniper shows that he is courageous during this scene because he decides to look over the parapet even though he knows there is an enemy. Lastly, The Republican Sniper is also aware in the story. He is aware when he noticed this “Then round the corner of a side street came an old woman” (Flaherty 438). In the story the Republican Sniper directly learns about this theme and also helps display the theme at the same time. He displays the theme when he talks about the city and the gunfire throughout it. This shows how even if one side of the war wins the battle the city will still be destroyed, and many lives will be lost. There is no real winner in that situation there is only one side that will be less devastated. He also directly learns the lesson when he finds his brother dead.
