The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, and Speech to the Virginia Convention by Patrick Henry compare in many different ways. Regardless of the fact that Patrick Henry’s piece was a speech and Thomas Jefferson’s was a legal document they both used rhetorical devices effectively to convey their message and persuade their audience. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was writing it so that it would stand the test of history. He made it a concrete document by using repetition and parallelism. In Henry’s speech, he was aiming to convince the delegates at the Virginia Convention to begin preparation for war With Britain.
Also Jefferson very deliberately borrows Thomas Rousseau ideas of a social contract. The Declaration of Independence was written to separate us from Great Britain, but the reasons were less political and more inspired by human will and what is right for all mankind, which is another reason why it is such an influential

The Declaration of Independence served as a model to Marquis de Lafayette as he wrote the first draft of The French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. These documents contained similar principles of equal rights for male citizens. The French declaration stated that men were “born and remain free and equal in rights.” In addition, the Declaration of Independence stated that male citizens had the rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

How did the declaration of independence get influenced by ideas during the Enlightenment? The declaration of independence could not have been done without John Locke. The Enlightenment period was a time where people questioned their rights and this led to philosophers questioning their government and their rights as a person. John Locke was one of the most famous philosophers during the Enlightenment period and believed in an idea known as “state of nature” which meant everyone was born with life, liberty, and property. John Locke wrote a book called “The Second Treatise of Government” in which he talks about natural rights and mentions, “Men agree to enter into society to preserve (keep) their natural rights to life.”

One connection between Two Treatises on Government by John Locke and the Declaration of Independent is that all men are equal. For example in Two Treatises on Government it talks about “a state also of equality wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another” (¶ Two Treatises on Government) In the Declaration of Independence it states that people should be treated equally regardless of age, sex, and conditions; the treatises on Government say everyone is equal, not just the way they are treated which is what the declaration implies. In Two Treatises on Government and in the Declaration of Independence it states that no man should have extreme power or be above the law.
The two documents that will be viewed is the United States’ Declaration of Independence and France’s Declaration of the Rights of Men and Citizen on what they are, what they do, and how they compare. Both are very important historical documents that molded France and the United States into the countries they are today. Learning about these documents is just learning more about how our home countries came to be and have achieved their greatness.
