The speech I read was “The Spirit of Liberty Speech” by Judge Learned Hand, which was presented in 1944 on “I am an American day.” Hand’s speech he had given is very important to everyone because the author explains that as Americans we should not be standing alone, but standing together as one. Also, Hand explains in his speech that we as the people should not be judging people by their color or by their religion. His purpose of this speech is to show us that we need to start realizing what we have done in the past and learn from our mistakes. The quotes I have picked out discuss about what Hand is trying to get across to us. For example, Hand tries to tell us that we should not take people for granted and treat them with respect. These quotes discuss how we as Americans need to start standing together as one. Hand states in his speech that “a picked group of those who had the courage to break from the past and brave the dangers and the loneliness of a strange land” (Hand). Also, we need to believe in something for our rights and equality to truly exist, and the government can’t take that away from us.
