Jane Addams wrote a book entitled “The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets.” In this book she critiques youth and its many aspects and characteristics. I feel like this book is still relevant today because some of the issues that she talks about are still present in today’s society, even though they may be in a different form. If we apply the thoughts and ideas that she presents in her book to society today with maybe a reformed idea then there is great probability that the youth of today will be revamped and have much higher chances for success.

She claims that the theatre captures the spirits of the youth and holds them hostage under its spell. It makes the youth feel as though the real world will never be as good as it is depicted in the plays and shows. As a result of this, often times the youth parade around with their heads held down because they feel as though nothing exciting will ever happen to them. Instead they try to create excitement for themselves because the theatre causes them to believe that they have the ability to control their own fate. It is not uncommon for somebody to view the successes and challenges of the hero of a story as their own and attempt to take them on. The youth then try to emulate the behaviors that they see presented to them. The only problem with this is that plays and shows that are malignant in nature can become the moral foundations of their lives. The theatre also causes crime among the youth. Young boys commit theft in order to get tickets to the theatre so that they do not miss the show. It also causes the youth to be absent from everyday life; they develop a complex that can be thought of as the lights are on but nobody is home.
