Max Vandenburg, a Jewish man who first appears in front of Hubermann's place as weak and sick. He seems weak at first but he pushes all of that aside. Max also has a deep hatred for Hitler due to his acts on Jews. He spends most of his days in the basement doing whatever he finds entertaining like writing, drawing, or even exercising. Max once wrote a book for Liesel on her birthday by cutting out paper of Hitler’s book and painting them white and drawing the pictures with black paint. The book was called “The Standover man” and gave it to Liesel. The Standover man is a book created by Max and It basically covers over his life and how much Liesel meant to him. Despite Max being “weak” from hiding from the Nazis and potentially starving himself. He doesn’t let that be the biggest of his problems. He’s being very patient despite barely having any freedom at all but he’s still waiting for that freedom to happen even if it took a long time. Even when Max could feel the freedom that he may have in the future. He knows he has to wait for that day to happen but won’t forget that freedom is a possibility at all. Max won’t rely on the chance of being freed or the possibility of getting caught. Max was later caught and got captured throughout the story and was in a crowd of Jewish people heading to Dachau until he met up with Liesel again. When Liesel was trying to call out Max’s name so he could notice her, they both got punished for supporting one another.
