The Stolen Innocence of Young Souls
“When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.” ― Patrick Rothfuss, the Name of the Wind.
According to Rothfuss, the innocence of children makes them enjoy their childhood unlike few adults. Therefore, children have nothing to busy their mind with, but to enjoy the moments of their life. Thus, they live today not years ahead. Children are the starts of our future that guide us when we stray in the darkness. There are many types of the figurative language that used in the text, such as similes, metaphors and imagery. For one thing, the first line of the this poem “A little black thing among the snow.” Contains a contrast with the first version of the poem “the song of innocence” which is that the dirt could not hurt the innocent child. Moreover, the chimney sweeper cries “in notes of woe” in contrast to “Could scarcely cry ’weep! ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep!” where the first version shows that the innocence of character would not let to pronounce the word cry, so instead of that he weeps. Furthermore, there is another conflict image in “Where are thy father & mother? Say? They are both gone up to the church to pray” and “they clothed me in the clothes of death” definitely, the church here symbolized to a faithful person which in the poem refers to Tom’s parents, but in fact they have no idea of what faith is, so it is a counter image of hypocrisy. The second stanza “because I was happy upon the health” is a metaphor for taking the child from his innocence to “the clothes of death” which is the risky job he had that would led him to death, and from “the winter’s song to “the notes of woe”. Additionally hypocrisy not only shows in his parents, it is also shows in the upper classes “God & his Priest & King” who ruined the lives of the young souls.
