The LGBTQ culture has changed over the decades. Homosexuality was illegal in the United States while being looked down upon and banned by Sodomy Laws since the 1600's. A lot has changed since then, according to a 2017 poll by Pew Research Center, "A majority of Americans (62%) support same-sex marriage, while 32% oppose it." The LGBTQ culture has been more accepted into pop culture the past couple of years, but the LGBTQ culture has changed over the decades. The Stonewall riots are credited with being the sparking force for LGBTQ political activism. Before the Stonewall riots, the LGBT culture was repressed. The Stonewall riots were the first time the LGBTQ movement had to fight against discrimination. A year after the Stonewall riots in New York on June 28th, 1970, the first Gay Pride Parade took place. The LGBTQ culture is now more mainstream than it was before, for example, LGBT characters were under-represented in movies and television. In 1997 Ellen DeGeneres came out as gay, so did her character. The episode won many accolades, but people thought Ellen would suffer a career backlash. Ellen did get the backlash at first, her show got canceled due to low ratings, but she later went on to a successful career as both a TV host and actress (Brynn Holland).
