• Joel is around 11 years old and is shy and not a risk taker. Tony is Joel’s best friend, is a hyper boy who takes a lot of risks through his life and it doesn’t bother him at all. Tony is always mixing things up and doing something crazy. Tony was energetic, and always doing something that involves danger. Tony also was very eager in this story and was important because he plays the role of the story as to why and how Joel is the main character. Joel’s dad is a very responsible man and is known as being cautious throughout the story. Mr. and Mrs. Zabrinsky are Tony’s parents but they are both irresponsible parents and does not care what Tony does during the days, but does seem very loving. • Throughout this story, there are no illustrations. …show more content…
Tony decided he wanted to go ride his bike to the state park to climb the rock cliffs and wanted Joel to go with him. Joel could sense out the bad ideas his friend, Tony would always come up with and tried to find a way for Joel to not feel obligated to go with Tony because it is his best friend. At the beginning, Joel thought for sure his dad would say no and it would get them out of having to go do a dangerous thing, Joel’s dad gave them permission, but on his honor that they would be safe. On the way to the park, Tony decided for new adventure instead of rock climbing and go to the Vermillion River to take a swim from one end to the other. This river is fast moving and Joel knew it was a bad idea. Joel reminded Tony of three dangers about the river, whirlpools, sinkhole, and currents. The dangers did not bother Tony though and Joel decided to do it with Tony. Joel swam across and got to the shore but he could not find Tony anywhere, and later knew he had drowned. Joel just kept replaying the tragic event through his head and remembering how he told his father before they left that on his honor they would be safe and go to the park and back. Joel had to go home to tell his parents and also Tony’s. Joel did not want to tell them the truth but Joel knows that he cannot escape the truth and reality as to what happened at the Vermillion river.
