In 1692 in a little town called Salem, Witch trials were performed some innocent people were hanged and others were falsely accused of performing witchcraft. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there was a couple that lived in Salem Village. The couple’s names were John and Elizabeth Proctor they were a very distant couple. Some people have lost their lives because of using witchcraft, but some of those people that were innocent shouldn’t have lost their lives because they had nothing to die for meaning they doing right and they were protecting their loved ones. He was also becoming a better person and realizing what he has done to destroy his marriage with Elizabeth. John shows up to court and tells the judges “ Why, I- I would free my wife sir.” The judges didn’t believe that he wanted to really save his wife. Proctor comes to court with evidence and proof that is wife and the others are not guilty, “Will you read this first, sir? It’s sort of testament. The people signing it declare their good opinion of Rebecca, and my wife, and Martha Corey.” Johns trying to get the court to understand that his wife an all those people locked up are innocent and that they didn’t use witchcraft. John mentions “I have three children - how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends. What he is trying to state here is that if he dies how will he teach his children right from wrong in the world and teach them to be real men. John is not proud of himself for what he did to Elizabeth but he will suffer the consequences that comes to him. The relationship between John and Elizabeth symbolizes that they went through alot together and suffered but Elizabeth learned that John is a very brave and caring man. The couples relationship was a bad relationship but turned into a good one. John had to be hanged for what he has done but Elizabeth forgave him for his crimes. Elizabeth also learned to tell the truth and to never use witchcraft because it can get her in serious trouble with the town.
