Rough Draft In the book The Stranger there are many events that seem abnormal or absurd. The main character, Meursault, is an overly apathetic man who seems to be the center point of absurdity in this novel. ‘Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know. I got a telegram from the home: “Mother deceased. Funeral tomorrow. Faithfully yours.” That doesn’t mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday.’ This opening sentence of the novel is the first hint to Meursault’s apathetic behaviors and absurd outlook on life. He doesn’t know what day his own mother died, so she must lack importance to him. Later on in the novel, Meursault mentions returning to work as if nothing has changed. His mother’s death had no impact on his life emotionally and he wishes to return to work as soon as he can. …show more content…
The purpose of Meursault’s trial is to find a rational explanation of the Arab’s absurd killing. The prosecution, however, cannot seem to find an absolute truth about the killing and therefore begin creating their own false assumptions. Instead of solely focusing on the reason Meursault is on trial the prosecution begins accusing him of having no feelings and no morals. They also spend a great deal of time accusing him of not caring about his mother.
