The article titled "The New Latino Underclass" by Douglas Massey is an insightful reading that shows the readers just how profoundly discrimination affects the Latinos/Latinas in the United States. It was quite insightful as he stated the history of the discrimination along with the two concepts of "Latino Threat Narrative" and "Hispanic Challenge. " Not only was this article by Massey insightful, but saddening too. I was unaware how harsh the immigration process here in the United States could be especially to innocent people who are seeking safety from their own country. I overall agree with Massey in the sense that we cannot just deport bunches of people, but we must understand they are human.
In The New Latino Studies Reader: A Twenty-First-Century Perspective by Ramon A. Gutierrez and Tomas Almaguer, chapters “Gender Strategies, Settlement, and Transnational Lives” and “She’s Old School Like That” talk about the gender issues first and second generation Latinas faced. In the first generation, Robert Smith articulates how gender structures impact the lives of men in women. Whereas in the second generation, Lorena Garcia communicates how mother and daughter relationships worked during that time period and how sexual behavior played a big role in their relationships.
The ever-growing Latino population in California has been using an alternative way to address their health problems. They are going back to their roots and using folk medicine or curanderismo. Due to this, they would prefer staying away from anything that is associated with the government; they would much rather not vote than be deported back to their country. The most pressing issues facing Hispanics would have to be deportation of illegal immigrants. Honestly, most of the people that get deported are treated unjustly, because their goal in life was come to the United States and pursue the American dream of living a better life. Just like U.S. Citizens from other races have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, all Hispanics should too. To fix the issue, I would make sure that every Hispanic illegal immigrant in the United States goes through a background check and have their employers write recommendation letters in reference to their work ethics as well as comment of the person’s relationship with his fellow workers.
For individual discrimination, it is mainly that through our personal experiences and lessons learned and received in the past, to prejudiced another person. At the same time, institutional discrimination usually produce prejudice to the most of large institutions and organizations for part of the race and ethnic. In current society, individual discrimination is often released in the color issue today; we often are isolated by our own color. Sometimes, people who the white drive in the cars are easier to get forgiveness and understanding of police officers, but for other color race, these people usually tend to be suspects by other people.
