1. In the book The summer I turned pretty by Jenny Han Belly is the protagonist of the story and Conrad is the antagonist along with Cam and Jeremiah. Some of the minor characters are Cam, Susan and Belly’s mom. Belly is a young 15 year old white female that turns 16 towards the end of the book. Belly has long brown hair, lots of freckles, and is as tan as the sand on a Mexican beach. Conrad is a young 18 year old with short brown hair and pale skin and is super good looking. “Conrad was the older one, by a year and a half. Belly is a dynamic character in The Summer I Turned Pretty because she changes a lot throughout the story. She finds new love and new feelings and become much more mature. Conrad is a flat character because he only shows his emotions a few times towards the end of the story. Jeremiah is a round character, Jeremiah talks about his feeling about Belly unlike his brother Conrad, explains how he feels about his mother's cancer, and is a shoulder for Belly to cry on when she needs someone who will understand. Cam is a static character because he because he remains the same by only showing his emotions towards Belly. Susan is a dynamic character. Susan changes a plethora of times throughout the story, an example of that would the first time she combated cancer and her fatal death. The main conflict of the story was when Belly fell in love with her summer romance, Cam. This was the conflict because Conrad (which was Belly’s crush of six years) realized that he had feelings for her. Belly though she no longer had any interest in Conrad after finding Cam but later came to realize that she was destined to be with Conrad. “I know you have feelings for me Conrad, admit it” (Han 245)!
4. The symbol in The Summer I Turned Pretty is the summer house. The book did not really have any symbols, but the beach house meant a lot to Belly. Ever since Belly was in her mother's womb she had gone to the beach house every summer. The beach house was where Belly fell in love for the first time, celebrated her first birthday, and had her first relationship. It also showed the freedom she felt when she was there, she had nothing to worry about. “The house wasn't big, but it was perfect for us, we looked forward to the perfect summers here” (Han 30).
5. The theme in the story is finding your own identity. This is the theme because Belly has to go through a series of feelings and emotions to finally find the guy that she
