Intro: The Sun Also Rises, a novel from Ernest Hemingway, is a story of a group of friends living life after the first world war in Paris. Many of them authors, they struggle to write while they enjoy every moment of their life drinking and partying. In “The Sun Also Rises”, Hemmingway’s use of setting demonstrates the main theme of the lost generation.

Jake Barnes, the narrator of this novel, is a war veteran. Because of the war, Jake’s life has changed forever. First of all, due to his injuries in the war, Jake can not have the love of his life. Jake became impotent in the war. Because of this, Brett, the love of his life, will not get in a relationship with him because he can no satisfy her need physically. We can see that because of the war, Jake will not get his soul mate and will stay sexually frustrated throughout the hole novel. Also, the injuries that Jake received during the war makes him less confident with his masculinity. We can see this in the novel by the way Jake attacks Robert Cohn. Jake sees him as a good male symbol and that’s why he attacks him to bring down his self esteem. Second of all, the war affected Jake writing career. Many of the people of the lost generation drink and party every night and live every night like it is there last because they have been mentally scared during the war. Jake is not an exception of this. He goes every night from bar to bar drinking and having fun. This has an effect on his writing career because he wakes up drunk and tired and can not write. Also, the war made him loose all his motivation for writing. (good
