The Surrounding Ganges Michael Cockroft Upper Iowa University September 18, 2016 Abstract: In this article review we will go over an article written by Mario L. Hesse on which he talks about gangs. We will go over how gangs form, why people join those gangs, and what is done to protect the public from those gangs. We will go over how social structure can be connected to this. In this review we will go over if being surrounded by gangs make a person more likely to commit a crime rather than set another path for themselves and to better themselves for their own safety and futures. We will also go over if a child is in a gang at a young age are they still just as likely to commit a crime as an adult. Gangs have been a part of our overall society since the early ages, such as the gangs that ran around in the west and robbed people and banks. Hesse writes that since the first scientific study of gangs (see Thrasher 1927), criminal justice officials have continued to address such gang issues as: (1) why do gangs form, (2) why do individuals stay in gangs, and (3) what is to be done legislatively to ensure public safety from gangs? Take gangs from a small town that have two rival gangs and if you even wear the wrong color you could be killed or beat, even when you are not in either gang. People stay in gangs because in some case the only way to get in or out is to get “jumped in,” which the gang members beat you until they cannot anymore. The legislation tries to be harder on gangs and gang crimes but in all reality there is only so much that they can do, they cannot just stop a person from joining a gang if that is what the person chooses to
