The Swimmer is a short story that was written by John Cheever. The swimmer focuses on an inevitable quest through time that is faced with hardships, denial, and the acceptance of reality. The story creates the illusion of being frozen in time, and not being able to decipher dream from actuality in a man’s life. There are mental obstacles that arise while swimming through neighbors’ pools on a journey to find home. Neddy Merrill is the main character, who throughout the story will take a journey through many of his neighbor’s pools. Neddy believes that it is his destiny to swim in these pools as a way of fate taking him home.

The Film’s story is that also that of a man who swims through the backyard pools of friends. The day is warm, sunny and beautiful. The water looks very refreshing and cool. Neddy Merrill is having drinks with some friends. Soon Neddy realizes that the chain of his friends and neighbors pool stretch across the valley to where he lives. He decides to swim the entire way until he makes it home. Along the way he will meets and talk with many of his peers. He even meets a woman who he tries to convince to come along on his journey home. as he made it to the different pools, some of the pool owners greeted and were excited to see him others weren’t and hated him. One of the pools belong to a woman Neddy used to date, she was still very bitter about seeing him in her backyard as it seemed to bring up old feelings. Neddy tries to comfort her and make her feel differently about him but her mind is made. She cares for him but refuses to allow him to draw her into his shenanigans. It is at her pool that he falls sick and she tries to help him but he is determined to swim home.
