The Hate You Give is a novel where the reader can observe and watch the characters develop. Angie Thomas uses roses to symbolize the characters' attitudes, feelings, and overall emotions. When the roses are blooming and healthy, the characters are in good spirits. When the roses are dry and dying, the characters are often in trouble or are in a negative situation. The roses can connect to the characters in six different instances. The character that embodies this the most and can connect to the roses the best, however, is Starr Carter, the main character of The Hate You Give. “Yeah. a little damaged, but alive. I'm gon try something different with them. Putting them in new soil can be like hitting a reset button.” (435). This line by Maverick heavily represents Starr. Just like the roses, Starr is a little damaged, with all the trauma she now has that came from the Khalil incident but things are starting to get better, and Starr is bouncing back. “Well rebuild.”(442). Starr says this while talking to Kenya about what the Carters are going to do with the store. Although “We’ll rebuild” literally means that they are going to rebuild the store, symbolically, it has a deeper meaning. Again, reflecting on the roses, just like putting them in new soil is like hitting a reset button and allowing them to grow again, Starr saying “We’ll rebuild” represents her starting again in this new life. Starr realizes that things will never be the same and won't go back to how they were before, so she looks on the brighter side, starts again, and guides her life on the right path. When analyzed, the roses in The Hate You Give have three different states in the story. First, the roses are all right and blooming, then they are dry and dying, and after that, they are recovering and they aren't in a worse situation than before. The main way that the roses connect to Cardigan is in the trimesters. In the fall term, most Cardigan pupils are happy and in good spirits mentally and physically. They have energy and are more motivated. In the winter term, however, students are more gloomy and unmotivated. The winter term is often regarded as the hardest term for many people at Cardigan, including both teachers and students. There are many reasons why the winter term is the hardest, including the lack of sunlight, the cold, and the fact that it is the middle of the school year. The spring term represents more hope for students and the Cardigan community is more motivated. This is because of the warmth and explosion of life around campus that comes with spring. It is also closer to the end of the school year, and with the finish line so close, everyone realizes that the distance to it isn't as far as they thought it would be, leading to a happier and more energetic
