In the book The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Marris, the main character Lale is offered a powerful role of tattooing the new prisoners. This job gave him lots of privileges. Lale shows in his actions that by helping and supporting each other, it will help you get through hard times. After all of these prisoners left their families and friends during the Holocaust, they got through this dreadful time by making new relationships. Without each other's support, the prisoners would have lost hope and felt alone in their fight to survive. During these terrible times in the concentration camps, all of the prisoners help each other in many ways. Since Lale had more power being the Tattooist, he took advantage of his power by helping others. In the book Gita is terribly sick with typhus and Lale tries to get her penicillin from his friends.(page 80) Without Lale’s help, Gita could have gotten a lot worse, or even died. Later on in the book a man is told that he will get hung that night. To help people, Lale would keep extra supplies in his bag. He would get all the supplies from his non prisoner friends who were able to come and go from the camp without suspicion. One day he got caught and he was threatened to be killed. Lale was brought to a man who was going to beat him until he got the truth out. Luckily the man who was going to beat him was Lale’s friend. His friend then explained to him, “You were kind to me and I will make the beating look worse than it is.” (pg 172) If Lale did not help his friend in the past, he would have likely gotten killed.
