The Tell-Tale Heart The activities of the narrator in the Tell-Tale Heart (Poe, 1843) present a classic case of a sick man who acts weirdly and thought to mad. The man instated had actions that looked like those of a mad person. This action are what led the people around to think that the narrator was a mad man while in fact he was not. The fact in the story are very clear in showing the sanity of the man as discussed in this essay. The action by the narrator to try and convince the crowd through telling a story of how he is not a mad man and how he ended up killing the old man is in itself the first proof of a mad man like action and not those of an actual mad man. In the conversation, the narrator starts by asking the audience a question. “TRUE! – Nervous – very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?” the narrator goes ahead to suggest the cause of this queer actions to be the disease he is suffering from.it has led the narrator to behave in the insane manner he is seen to be in. “The disease had sharpened my senses – not destroyed – not dulled them” the hallucinations are evident when the narrator says hat “I heard many …show more content…

He pretended to be friendly to the old man for a long time preparing the heinous act. This is a clear sign of a person who has a sane mind, is able to plan and execute elaborate plans. “You should have seen how wisely I proceeded –with what caution –with what foresight.” he is also able to interpret the meaning of the old man heart beats to be the terror the old man is going through at the moment when he wanted to kill him. In addition at the scene of murder, the narrator also is fully aware of the dangers of the shriek being given out by the old man had a very sane mind that understood that the shriek would penetrate the wall and be heard by the neighbors.
