Imagery and Mood in The Tell-Tale Heart In the story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” written by Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery to set an intense mood. For example “When my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out- ‘Who’s there?’”, (Poe 1). This was good imagery because it makes the reader feel like the situation is a dream that is unwanted. This imagery creates an intense mood, which then makes the reader feel there and see it all in their head. Another intense imagery quote is “Presently heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror”, (Poe 1).
