They speak of morality while they douse screaming children and old women in burning napalm. Your draft-resisters are called cowards and 'peaceniks.' For refusing to follow orders they are either put in jails or scourged from the country. Those who demonstrate against this country's unfortunate Asian adventure are clubbed down in the streets. The GI soldiers who kill the innocent are decorated by Presidents, welcomed home from the bayoneting of children and the burning of hospitals with parades and bunting. They are given dinners, Keys to the City, free tickets to pro football games." This quote represents the feelings of many Americans in the United States, but the citizens in Vietnam went through an inconceivable amount of pain and terror. The Vietnam War changed millions of lives. Tension arose between Vietnam and France in the 19th century. This was the beginning of what influenced the catastrophic war. This side still managed to win by using a war tactic that tired the American's and South Vietnamese militaries. South Vietnam was poor and going through big amounts of poverty. They depended on the United States to help them win. North Vietnam realized that they might have a chance to win. The Soviet Union trained and supplied North Vietnam with military weapons. South Vietnam also had a vulnerable organization. They were made up of mostly peasants who did not know how to fight but soon learned. A general of the North Vietnam troops once remarked about how the North knew their weaknesses and strengths. They also understood the war very well, more than South Vietnam's allies.
