This war happened mainly because the U.S. wanted to expand to the Pacific Ocean to fulfill their Manifest Destiny, trying to take away Mexico’s land. Mexico refused to to give land to the U.S. The big question is whether the U.S. was justified in fighting Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because Manifest Destiny, too much Mexican interference, and Texas was invaded. One reason the Mexican War was justified was Manifest Destiny. In Document A, John O’Sullivan writes: “Texas is now ours...Let their reception into the “family be frank, kindly, and cheerful….”
The Mexican had expanded their land towards Texas and the Americans did the same. The Alamo was already part of Mexico. The people in Texas wanted to separate due to the Mexicans laws, religion, and politics and did not want to pay taxes to the Mexicans homeland. A lot of the Texan citizen were American immigrants who were accustomed to the laws and freedoms of the United States. They did not respect the culture and beliefs of Mexico.

The way they claimed annexed was by saying the Rio Grande was the southern boundary of Texas but Mexico said it was the Nueces River. In regards to the war, Americans were greatly divided. The northerners hated it because of the fact that Texas favored slavery. Those in the south liked the idea of a war because it would help expand to the west. This expansion would provide more land and opportunity.
The Mexican-American war altered the United States environmentally, culturally and politically. First, on February 2, 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo two years post the beginning of the war. The treaty not only achieved President Polk’s goal to achieve California from Mexico but also granted the U.S. over 500,000 square miles of new territory. The new land caused approximately 90,000 spanish speaking, mostly Catholic Mexicans under American jurisdiction. Second, Nativism, a rising anti-catholic and anti-immigrant deemed the Mexicans inferior.
As a voting member in the debate over annexation of Texas and war with Mexica, I voted yes because I belive that Texas offers a lot to the U.S. First, for the U.S to grow, the people need to expand westward. Texas is the next place to go to for westward expansion. Second, England may want that land, but we can't let them have it. If they get the land, they may want to go to war with us. It is easier to go to war when you are on the same land, not fighting over the ocean.
The conflict had started when the Mexican government wanted to end slavery in Texas . The Americans that had been living in Texas had refused . From that point both the Mexican and the American had started to have conflicts . The Mexican government expected that the American obeyed their laws . In the year 1833 Empresario Stephen F. Austin had traveled to Mexico to declare the independence of Texas .
The US did not not have solid reasons to do so besides their own greed, so the US hid behind the idea of Manifest Destiny and tried to justify their actions. John O’Sullivan was the New York City journalist who coined the term Manifest Destiny. He said, “Imbecile and distracted, Mexico never can exert any real government authority over such a country…’’ (O’Sullivan, 8). O’Sullivan and the US suggested that Mexico “needed” the US to come and take over, because otherwise Mexico was going to fall apart. Although this was somewhat true, the US did not try to help Mexico through this difficult time; instead, the US took advantage of Mexico’s weakness and tried to take over completely.
After Texas became part of the US and also trying to buy California, Mexican soldiers fired upon the Americans. While the Americans were trying to extend the US, Mexican army decided to attack Americans. Mexican army attacked on the Texas side of Rio Grande. The Mexicans attacked on the US territory Texas had already gotten its independence in 1836. This war was in 1846.
The Mexican-American War changed the Unites States of America in a monumental way. This war changed The U.S.A.’s relationship with foreign powers and the economic standpoint of the nation. The Mexican- American war, and its strong ties to manifest destiny, shaped the nation in a country bordered by two seas with a chance for common folk and foreigners to have a sustainable life due to the gold rush. The war can also be accounted for the downfall leading to the Civil War over the conflict of slavery due to the land purchased in the wars treaty. Conflict between Mexico and the United States began when Texas, previously part of Mexico, became part of the United States.
Many believe the Mexican-America war had been driven from the idea of “Manifest Destiny”,( a belief that was said for America to have a God- given right to expand, From ‘sea to shining sea’). Little did anyone know that this believe would be cause of a great amount of suffering for Native Americans, Hispanics, and even the United States own citizens. Shortly after the Texas war of independence from Mexico, tension began to rise between the two of the largest independent nations, on the North American continent after texas became apart of the Unites States. The Mexican war was one of the major events in our US expansion. The Mexican war started when James K Polk became president and wanted to take steps to gain Oregon. Polk wanted to have this battle because it would give the US a chance to expand all the way from east to west coast, have borders on both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, and it would give us a better fighting advantage over the British. Citizens would also get more opportunity to move in and begin raising crops. In this war we have gained New Mexico, California, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Texas.
The United States war with Mexico continues to be a divisive topic among many people because of its background. The Mexican-American war was a fight between Mexico and America for land. America’s belief at the time was Manifest Destiny, which meant that they believed that America should extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific ocean. In the end, America benefited from the war and got the land. The United States expanded its size, achieving their dream of Manifest Destiny.
