A Long Way Gone is a true story of a individual named Ishmael Beah, who becomes an unwilling soldier during a civil war in Sierra Leone. Having access to education can change people’s lives and it can change the world. Ishmael Beah starts to recover when he is introduced to education. Even though he might of not liked it he did want to stay in there for the benefit he would out. To him he benefit was taking trips to the city but education also benefited him with rehabilitation. So while he was in school he showed indomitable spirit by the struggles he faced through school. “It was just a way of “ refreshing our memories,” as the teacher put it. We didn’t pay attention in class. We just wanted to be present so we wouldn’t miss the trips to the city.” Even though Ishmael Beah didn’t see education as a tool of gaining intelligence or a tool for rehabilitation at the time he saw it as a benefit as going to the city. So even though he necessarily did not want to be there he kept going so he could earn what he wanted. So this would represent indomitable spirit because his spirit was not broken and he just looked for the award he would give out of it.
