Guilt and regrets haunt everybody, whether you admit it or not. Many people don’t overcome their mistakes until much later. In “Apologies all Around,” Jeff Soesbe not only wrote a short story, but he also made the theme into a powerful lesson. The theme in “Apologies All Around” is that it is okay to feel guilt and to apologize, it does not show weakness. The evidence to support this theme is how Winston got something he needed, Karl got reassurance that he was forgiven, and both men felt less weight on their shoulders after coming clean.

My first piece of evidence is how Winston got something he needed, a reason, and an explanation. Winston had never gotten a call back from Future Industries and was left with the unanswered question of why. The text contained the apology Karl had sent. Karl’s apology read, “I didn’t want a young hotshot like you competing with me, so I spread the rumor you were impossible to work with.” This is showing the exact message Winston needed after so many years. Karl may have thought nothing of it, but it meant something to Winston. To put in into perspective, something you may have done or said might have just seemed silly to you but it could have meant something to somebody else. You could say that the theme is that everything happens for a reason. This, of course, is a possibility. Winston would not have his family and his current life if he was excepted into Future Industries. Karl had made a decision to say something about Winston and although it was upsetting and hurtful, it put Winston where he is today. There is plenty of evidence to claim that this could be a possible theme, but I do not believe that it puts the entire story into perspective.
