Respect
It is prevalent for people to be treated with a lack of respect, no matter where they are. Thousands of people kill, slaughter, harass, and torment others daily. For centuries this has been going on all over the world. Whether it be because of your skin color, how you look, where you’re from, your sexuality, or your last name. This pure hatred has always existed on this cruel earth, and will never truly go away.
Some specific stories where a lack of respect is a theme could be “Black Girl” and “Marriage is a Private Affair”. In these stories, blatant disrespect is shown toward certain characters throughout the stories. Again, with the reasoning being mostly about their gender or skin color. In “Black Girl”, Diouana was sick of her life living with Madame Pouche and took her own life at the end of the story. Even after all of the ridiculing and lies she dealt with, her death she was still objectified. The newspaper title read, “Homesick African Girl Cuts Throat in Antibes.” They didn’t bother to even use her name in the headline, instead simply referring to her just as “African Girl”. This blatant objectification shows that the people in the story viewed Diouana as an object, rather than a living person.

This shows pure disrespect towards the women in the tribe and proves the men in the tribe only view women as something made to be a wife. They aren’t in love with the women they marry and only marry them for their wifely qualities. This is very powerful for both writer and reader alike, because in the new years, women are more than objects and always have been more, and they deserve the same respect as every other
