Life is Beautiful released in 1998 and directed by Roberto Benigni who also played the main character of Guido Orefice is based on a true story of an auschwitz survivor during World War 2. The movie is about italian family who is sent to a concentration camp. The father who is with the son creates an elaborate lie about the family being part of a large scale game where winner who is the first person to get 1000 points wins a tank. The father is capable of maintaining this lie and keeping his son safe until the day of the camp's liberation, when he is caught trying to find his wife and murdered by nazis. The father allows himself to be ignorant of the evil going on around him for the sake of his child, and ends up losing his life to save his sons. Perhaps the most notable scene of innocence in the movie would be the scene where the father volunteers to translate the rules of the camp into italian for the german officer. When he volunteers he knows that he hasn't the slightest clue of what the officer is saying but this is how he sets up the ploy of the game to his son. While the officer is stating the rules of the camp the father is stating the rules of the made up game and puts a humorous twist on it saying for the officer such as “I had 20 lollipops yesterday, what a stomach ache.” allowing the son to believe the scheme his father sets up, and see past the malevolent
