One’s obsession can change one’s life forever, impacting others along the way. This concept can be observed in Ernest Cline’s novel, Ready Player One. A common theme in the book is that one’s obsession can impact one’s life and there are actions and events that support this theme as seen by the protagonist and other characters. Characters like Wade Watt, Artemis, Sorrento, and James Halliday, acted in a way or were part of certain events that showed their obsession over something or someone, and their actions impacted their or someone else’s life. “One's obsession can have an impact on someone’s life” is the most prevalent theme in the novel Ready Player One. It resulted in him bombing a part of the Stacks near Wade Watt’s location in an attempt to kill him because he refused to help him and the IOI with the contest. The particular example is demonstrated through Wade’s quote when he says: “You’d kill me?” I said. “To win a videogame contest?” (162). The quote shows the extreme and severe attempts of Sorrento to win the contest, showing that people like Sorrento will go to such lengths to achieve what they want. The example of Sorrento is a great example of blindly thinking and decision-making that was created by his obsession with the contest. The obsession made him not think critically and not think twice before exploding a part of the Stacks. Sorrento’s example shows that when someone is obsessed over something, they can be blinded and be insensitive, once again showing that one’s obsession can be the result of someone’s life being ruined or
