Introduction: A film that we studied this year was called “Cool Runnings” directed by Jon Turteltaub. The plot of this film was the story of the first ever Jamaican Bobsled team, and their journey to compete at the olympics in 1984. One theme that interested me in this film is the idea of sacrifice. It interested me because it made me realize that sacrifice is a big part of success and that to achieve something you may need to make some sacrifices. Dialogue, camera shots and music are some of the techniques the director used to show the theme of sacrifice. This scene shows sacrifice because they are sacrificing their reputations. The other teams competing were in shock when the Jamaican team showed up to the starting line, no one believed they were capable of riding a bobsled or even withstanding the cold temperatures. The Jamaican team is sacrificing their reputation by trying to prove the other countries wrong. The director uses techniques such as camera shots, sound effects and slow motion to show what was at stake for the team. By using low angle shots when the team was waiting at the starting line, the director is showing effort and concentration, the shot then switches to show their home country of Jamaica and the whole village cheering them on. This scene links to the movie as a whole because it shows that they have a lot of people watching their race, their families and friends, the other teams, and countries all over the world. This shows how important this race is and that they are sacrificing a lot to be at the
