Children of Blood and Bone, a book by Tomi Adeyemi, is a 2018 bestseller that talks about a 17 year-old girl, Zelie, and her older brother, Tzain, traveling around the kingdom of Orisa in order to bring back magic after the king of Orisha commanded a raid that killed every maji, magic-holding people, and diviners, people who are destined to become a maji in their adolescent years, over 13. In her mission to bring back magic she meets Princess Amari of Orisha, together they fight against the oppression against maji, people with magic powers, class discrimination while running away from Inan, the prince of Orisha, as he hunts them down. During one of Amari’s flashbacks we can see her thoughts, “Strike, Amari, Father’s voice thunders in my head, bringing me back to the tears spilled when he commanded me to fight Inan. I dropped my sword. I refused. Then my brother’s blade ripped through my back.” (221) This statement shows how Saran helped the cause of Amari’s trauma and her little self-worth issues when it states, “I dropped my sword. I refused.” It shows how even if she didn’t want to disobey her own father she stood up and decided to forfeit the sword fight which later caused Amari to think lowly of herself for being a coward and disobey her father while Inan could. While Zelie fights against the guard collecting taxes she has a flashback, “In this moment I’m that little girl again, helpless as the soldier drags my mother away.” (16) This quote shows how Zleiie feels helpless as when the event of the raid where her mother was brutally killed because she was a maji which led her to having trauma of the raid and seeking revenge against the royal family. It relates to my claim, The impacts of trauma are depicted in the book through the character Zelie's flashbacks, which help readers understand why Zelie seeks revenge on the royal family, because it describes just how Zleie feels even thinking of how helpless she was when she couldn't save her own mother. After arguing with Zelie, Inan thinks about Zelie’s memories that he took a peak on, “‘Mama!’ I close my eyes. My mind echoes with Zélie’s shrieks. Bitter cries no child should ever make. Trauma she never should’ve witnessed.” (278) In this statement it shows how Zelie witnessed the death of her own mother and Inan feeling bad for her because of his fathers commands of the raid.
